An osteoclast is a type of bone cell that resorbs bone tissue . This function is critical in the maintenance and repair of compact bones in the mammalian skeleton. Kolliker discovered osteoclasts in 1873 . An osteoclast is a large multinucleated cell and human osteoclasts on bone typically have five  nuclei and are about 15 0-200 μm in diameter. In bone, osteoclasts are found in pits in the bone surface, which are called resorption bays, or  Howship's Lacunae. Osteoclasts are characterized by a cytoplasm with a homogeneous, "foamy" appearance. This appearance is due to a high concentration of vesicles and vacuoles. These vacuoles include lysosomes filled with acid phophatase. This permits characterization of Osteoclasts by their staining for high expression of tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and cathepsin K . Some wounds are not amenable to management by primary, delayed primary, or secondary closure. In such cases skin grafts can be used for secure wound coverage Definition -  A skin graft is a piece of skin taken from one part of the body , detached from its blood supply, and then transferred to another part of the body that allows its re-incorporation. Early adhesion of the graft is due to fibrin clot that forms within minutes after skin transfer The process of a graft being accepted at the recipient site is called ‘ Take ’. Steps of Graft uptake- Imbibition (24–48 h)— During this stage, the graft relies on nutrients reaching it by passive means  from the recipient bed . The graft increases in weight and volume.  Inosculation —Some vascularity is re-established by blood vessels in the recipient bed connecting to vessels in the graft dermis. Incidence of DVT -  1 person per 1,000 population per year. It is a relatively common complication of trauma . Damage Control Orthopaedics (DCO) is an approach that contains and stabilizes orthopaedic injuries so that the patient's overall physiology can improve. Its purpose is to avoid worsening of the patient's condition by the “ second hit ” of a major orthopaedic procedure and to delay definitive fracture repair until a time when the overall condition of the patient is optimized. Minimally invasive surgical techniques , such as external fixation , are used initially.
